Born in Willemstad,[3]Agustien began his career in the youth system of Willem II.[4] He played two seasons in that club's first team in the Eredivisie, and appeared twice in the 2005–06 UEFA Cup.[1] He signed for AZ in 2006, and was loaned to Roda JC for the 2006–07 season to gain more experience.[4]
Agustien joined English Championship club Birmingham City in July 2008 on a season loan, with an option to make the deal permanent at the end of the 2008–09 season for a fee of €2 million.[5] He made his first-team debut in the League Cup defeat at Southampton on 26 August 2008,[6] and played his first match in the Football League four days later in a 1–1 draw at Norwich City.[7] Having missed pre-season training because of a hernia operation, he did not adapt immediately to the pace and physicality of English football.[2][8] He played 20 games in all competitions, but the second half of his season was dogged by injury. Birmingham manager Alex McLeish "couldn't commit [himself] to bringing him in for the money asked", so Agustien returned to AZ when his contract expired on 26 May 2009.[9]
After his return to AZ, he was loaned to RKC Waalwijk, newly promoted to the Eredivisie, for the 2009–10 season.[10] At the end of that season, he was released by AZ.[11]
Agustien went on trial to Polish Ekstraklasa side Wisła Kraków in July 2010.[12] Later he joined Swansea City of the English Championship on trial,[11] but sustained an injury in a pre-season match which delayed his signing.[13][14] After passing what was described as a "tough" medical, Agustien signed a two-year contract with the Welsh club in October.[15] Agustien made his debut for Swansea debut on the 69 minutes, coming on for Andrea Orlandi against Leicester City.[16] After making 10 appearance for Swansea this season, Agustien desperate for first-team football as his first team is limited and desperate to go on loan. Agustien has announced that clubs have shown interest in his services, but Swansea turned down the approaches.[17]
Agustien signed on loan for Crystal Palace in March 2011 until rest of the season.[18] After being on bench un-used for Crystal Palace, Agustien finally made his debut against Barnsley in a 2-1 victory for Crystal Palace.[19] Agustien went on to make 8 appearance for Crystal Palace.
Following his loan spell at Crystal Palace, Swansea City was the first welsh club to get promoted to the Premier League. Agustien made his Premier League debut in a 4-0 loss against Manchester City.[20] Agustien suffered a hamstring injury which keep him sidelines for 6 weeks[21] and was back for the Manchester United match which Swansea loss 1-0. In a match between QPR and Swansea which resulted 1-1 draw, Agustien finds himself playing a right back after their main right back Àngel Rangel was limped off with an ankle injury. Agustien was named man of the match in a 1-1 draw against QPR. Agustien was content to help the team by switching to an unfamiliar right-back position and was happy to give his all in the role despite having never played there before.[22]
"I was a little frustrated because I think I was playing well in midfield. But it is not about me, it is about the team. I did my best for the team.f I can help the team by filling in that position, then that's fine." Agustien tell Swansea's official website on being a right back.[23]
At international level, he was a member of the Netherlands under-20 squad for the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship, where he played in two of the group-stage matches.[24][25] He played for the Dutch Olympic squad that reached the final of the 2006 Toulon Tournament; Agustien converted his penalty as his team lost in a penalty shootout.[26] He played again, and scored, at the 2007 edition,[27] and also played for the under-21 team, including two appearances in qualifying matches for the 2009 European under-21 championships.[28] Named in the Netherlands' preliminary 37-man squad for the 2008 Olympics,[29] he was not selected for Beijing.[30]
